The acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has described the continued killings of policemen and other security personnel in the course of their duties as "heart rending."
He spoke yesterday during his monthly meeting with senior police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
"Many security challenges are always facing the country in different dimensions. Such challenges include erratic bombings by terrorists, communal clashes, kidnapping, armed robbery, bunkering, assassinations and piracy.
"And more heart rending is the constant killing of policemen and other security personnel. In all these, the police have been most affected. The triumph of evil over good is temporary," he said.
He called on the police to be combat ready and take proactive measures in tackling the challenges, adding that the triumph of evil over good was temporary.
He urged police officers to be cautious in the way they discharge their duties.
He said the recent killing of retired Deputy Inspector General Saleh Abubakar Ningi in Kano was worrisome and left some questions unanswered.
Responding to a question, Abubakar said his recent directive on highway patrol was yielding the desired result as there were reports that the crime rate on the roads had reduced.
Shortly before the meeting started, the IG called for a minute's silence in honour of victims of the Bauchi church bombing and Dana plane crash. The two incidents happened on Sunday, June 3.
