AWKA—FORMER Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku said yesterday that the present generation of Nigerians had failed the country, noting that Nigeria developed faster under regionalism.
Speaking at the second Emeka Anyaoku lecture on good governance in the Anambra State capital, advocated for restructuring of the country with the main aim of reducing the cost of governance.
He regretted the present insecurity in the land and called for pragmatic and proactive measure to encourage the youth to channel their energy towards ideal nation-building.
In his speech, Governor Peter Obi urged the youth to emulate celebrated role models who would inspire them to greatness and resist being used by desperate individuals to achieve selfish ends so that their future would not be derailed.
He noted that Anambra State had produced quality human resources including, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, who he observed, had attained one of the highest positions in the world, bringing honour and pride to the state and entire black race.
Governor Peter Obi, who observed the large presence of old students of Merchants of Light School, Oba, Anyaoku's alma mater, charged Old Students Associations of various schools to be actively involved in monitoring students in their former schools to enable them attain their full potentials.
According to him, old students have an important responsibility of nurturing and encouraging the present students to acquire necessary knowledge and skills for their future roles in the society. Governors of Cross River, Delta and Rivers states were represented at the lecture.
Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River who was represented by his Special Adviser on Orientation and Public Affairs, Mr. Edet Asim noted that Anambra State had produced quality human resources who were making impact in various parts of the world and extolled the vision of the present governor of the state, Mr. Peter Obi in the development of the state.
