The elections, Dewar said, mean a  lot to Nigeria, Africa and the international community.

Dewar, in a statement, urged INEC and security forces "to use the additional time to press on as rapidly as possible with all logistical and practical arrangements to ensure credible, peaceful elections''.

He also challenged political leaders, parties and candidates ''to commit to democratic values and behaviours, including mutual respect and policy-based dialogue, avoiding corruption, rigging and hate speech''.

Given the importance of the elections to the international community, Dewar encouraged Nigerian leaders to do everything to build confidence and ensure that every vote counts 'and the will of the people to be known through credible polls''.

He reiterated the commitment of Britain to supporting Nigeria for credible elections.
