Abuja - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday commissioned a factory to make bullet-proof vests and other items for the nation's armed and security forces, in the northern city of Kaduna.

Jonathan inaugurated the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) factory for the armed forces and other security agencies in Africa's most populous nation.

The event indicated that the military had responded to the government's local content policy "aimed at building indigenous capacity in the petroleum and other sectors of the national economy", said the president.

The government's aim was to help develop local manufacturing, create jobs and in time become globally competitive, he added.

DICON was established in 1964, mainly to produce small arms and ammunitions for the Nigerian Army, paramilitary and security agencies in the country. - AFP
