The Senate today resolved to send a high-powered delegation, to be led by Deputy Senate Leader Abdull Ningi, to condole with the Yobe State government and the family of former Senate Minority Leader Usman Al-Bashir who died in an auto crash on Monday.
This followed the adoption of a motion by Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba who described Al-Bashir's death as the end of a fine gentleman who played the politics of reconciliation in the fifth Senate.
Earlier in his lead debate, Ndoma-Egba said, "A few days ago, I saw the late senator at a wedding in Abuja where he was boisterous and in his usual manner, went round exchanging pleasantries and shaking hands with people. When he was in the Senate, he was a committed and patriotic lawmaker.
"His untimely death has brought grief, not just to this distinguished Senate, but to Nigeria as a whole. With Al-Bashir's death, I believe Yobe State has lost a great Nigerian".
Before a minute silence was observed in Al-Bashir's honour, Senate President David Mark described the deceased as a nationalistic parliamentarian whose contributions shaped the resolutions of the Senate.
