Reports To: Manager-Network Architecture & Strategy
Job Summary:
Collaborate with team members to improve overall network capacity and quality by focussing on Quality of Service and future network design in order to support business objectives and an ever changing business environment
Principal Functions:
Provide input to develop long term strategies for 2G/3G design and planning, including BSC/TC, BTS, RNC, NodeB, etc
Provide input for BSS/ RAN dimensioning to cater for current and forecasted growth in terms of voice and data traffic
Analyze drive test logs and network counters in order to improve network performance
Investigate problems and issues relating to poor radio network capacity/ performance; take ownership until resolution
Effectively utilize appropriate/ available tools to predict coverage, capacity and interference across the radio network
Develop and deliver technical reports on capacity
Work closely with Core (PS and CS) and Transmission Planning teams to plan short- and long-term Gb and A interface resources, including signaling requirements
Maintain at all times detailed knowledge and database of the entire radio network, including:
• Number of nodes across the radio network BSS/ RAN nodes, etc
• Site build configurations and information
• Traffic trend (voice and data)
• Network performance in accordance with KPIs of RF Planning; and,
• Optimization to form basis for capacity planning
Liaise with IT Department to develop tools to automate information gathering on radio network capacity
Initiate quick wins to manage sudden network bottlenecks as a result of commercial promotions and activities
Assist in generating long- and short-term capacity plan to match Commercial business plan
Keep abreast of global and local best practices with regard to radio network capacity planning and design
Track detailed RF designs for various roll-out phases
Work closely with stakeholders on the overall radio network capacity plan
Perform other tasks as assigned by the Manager-Network Architecture & Strategy
Educational Requirements:
First degree or equivalent in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering
Relevant postgraduate (M.Sc.)/ professional qualifications/ certifications will provide an advantage
Experience & Skills:
Minimum of 4 years directly relevant work experience
Ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate:
• Excellent knowledge of radio network architectures – 2G and 3G
• Expert-level 2G and 3G planning and optimization experience
• Complete understanding of RF system design, RF coverage planning, site identification, frequency planning and interference analysis
• Strong technical competence in RF Link budgets, system dimensioning for coverage and capacity including traffic analysis, etc
• Excellent knowledge of BSS/ RAN protocols and interfaces including Uu, lub, etc
• Past or recent experience working with at least 2 of the following RF vendor systems – Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens, Ericsson
• Ability to challenge current thinking and suggest improvements and solutions
• Expert-level experience in using capacity planning tools like Cerion Intelligent builder and optimizer, Groundhog CapMo, Mentum Planet, etc
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
