The twenty seven soldiers were entenced to life imprisonment for "mutiny" by a military tribunal led by  Brigadier General Ishaya Bauka who claimed the soldiers acted mutinously by engaging in public protests against their superiors that embezzled their allowances and monetary entitlements after returning from foreign  peacekeeping operations.
