ABEOKUTA—FORMER governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, yesterday, broke his silence on the corruption allegations levelled at him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, saying his government was the most investigated in the country.
The former governor, however, declined to comment on the administration of his successor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, saying, "we are watching and we are monitoring."
Speaking at the 50 birthday of his former Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Sina Kawonise, in Ijebu-Ode, Daniel said many past leaders were prosecuted because of their courage to correct the wrong and lamented that despite EFCC's allegations that he stole billions and killed many people, nothing incriminating had been found against him.
He said: "I am happy today, because there is nothing our administration has not been accused of. We have stolen billions. We have done rituals. We assassinated people. There is no offence in this world our administration has not been accused of."
While linking his alleged persecution to what happened to some past leaders such as the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the leader of Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Daniel said: "Even Jesus Christ was crucified because of his courage to right the wrong."
Daniel, who commended Kawonise for his loyalty, chastised his former aides who deserted him during his trying time.
Adebanjo accuses Obasanjo
At the event, Chief Adebanjo alleged that reported corruption cases in the regime of President Goodluck Jonathan were instituted by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Adebanjo, who took a swipe at the eight years rule of the former president, said his administration failed to keep his promise in his acceptance speech on May 29, 1999 when he was being sworn in as president.
The Afenifere chieftain , in a lecture, entitled, "threats against the ship of state" noted that "but as far back as inception of the current civilian (not democratic) regime from May 29, 1999, corruption had been prevalent."
He said "and one of the highlights of the acceptance speech of former President Olusegun Obasanjo when he was being sworn in as President was his vow to wage a relentless war against corruption in all
ramifications. He pledged that it would no longer be "business as usual."
He lamented that the result of the "Usual" was not forthcoming, declaring, "we are all living witnesses to the high profile corruption cases that pervaded his eight years rule," as he went on listing such cases.
Among such, Adebanjo listed was the impeachment of three Senate presidents. "There were cases of Ministers bribing legislators for budget and approval. What of the former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun's episode?
