EBONYI State Police Command yesterday tear gassed and assaulted workers and National officials of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, led by Comrade Marcus Omokhuale who were in the state to conduct the state council election.

It was alleged that agents of the state government had earlier brought what the workers considered as a "black market injunction" to stop the election for reasons best known to the state government.

According to sources, the NLC officials and the workers had maintained that since it was a labour matter, and if the government was aggrieved, it ought to have gone to industrial court to seek redress.

However, it was gathered that a detachment of policemen came to the venue of the election and allegedly fired tear gas indiscriminately to disrupt the election. It claiming it got orders from the Commissioner of police.

The angry labour leaders and workers were said to have gone to see the Police Commissioner who allegedly refused to grant them audience until the Assistant Inspector-General, AIG, of Police in the Zone intervened.
