A Senior Magistrate in Benue State Judiciary, Mr Emmanuel Azembe was beaten to pulp by a Mobile police officer, Idrissu J. Kennedy, attached to MOPOL 13 Squadron, yesterday in Makurdi.
The trouble started along Otukpo road when the magistrate who was driving on the road tried to caution Idrissu who, it was learnt, drove past so recklessly that he almost hit him. But according to feelers, Idrissu took umbrage. He brought out a canister of teargas from his car and fired it directly into Emmanuel's eyes.
Our correspondent gathered that Emmanuel later drove to B Division police station to report the officer who also followed him to the station. There, officer Idrissu pounced on him, uttering some swear words in Hausa.
The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Makurdi branch, has petitioned the Benue State Commissioner of Police, demanding for immediate trial of the offending officer.
