Patience Jonathan, the wife of Nigeria's President has made history being the first Nigerian First Lady to be appointed in a state civil service. She was named the Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa State along with other seventeen persons by the Governor of Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson.
"By the constitutional power conferred on the state governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, in section 203 sub-sections 2c, Dame Patience Jonathan and seventeen others have been elevated to the position of Permanent Secretary in the state civil service".
Also prominent among those appointed is Linnet Tebepah, wife of the current Chairman of NDDC, Tarilah Tebepah.
Others include J.E. Oye, Samson Ayibeboa, Antonia Koroye, Ziwari Billie, Buruboyefa John, Dikuro Ayebameh, Serge Williams, Olu Kuruom, G.I.Izein, Philomena Alodie, Omietimi Kojo, Ese Izonebi, Ohougha Maythias, James Clinton, Moses Teibowei, A. Samanyi and Vivian Odiowei.
Explaining their reason for the appointment, the senior special assistant to the governor on media affairs, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said that the First Lady was a teacher in the state's civil service and has been on leave of absence since 1999 to join her husband in his political service; first as a deputy governor, governor, vice president, then president. If not for the leave of absence, according to him, Mrs Jonathan would have risen to the status of a permanent secretary by now.
