The Nigerian Police is gradually gaining grounds against terror groups in the country and will soon reduce the rate of insecurity, Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar said yesterday.

Speaking to State House correspondents shortly after his confirmation by the Police Council, he said prior to his assumption of office, attacks on police stations in some parts of the north were rampant but that the situation has since changed for good. He said, "Crime and criminality notwithstanding whoever group, the issue is we have to checkmate the act of crime and criminality. We were aware of the situation before we came on board. When we came on board, you are aware that police stations were being attacked, policemen were being killed, banks were being attacked, moneywas being stolen without any action taken.

"Today, the situation is different and you will see more action."

The IGP said the police would also lead the fight against corruption in the country saying the force has continued to gather evidence on the fuel subsidy scam

He was appointed as acting IGP on January 26 following the retirement of the former IGP Hafiz Abubakar Ringim.

Abubakar assured of police readiness to ensure peaceful election in Edo State billed for Saturday.
