He said he stands by the Consensus Option put in place by the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) to enable the North to retain the presidency next year.

Babangida, who made the clarifications in a statement in Abuja by his spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said he is not involved in any "nocturnal meeting" to back out of Consensus Deal."

The statement said:  "To state the obvious, General Babangida is not contemplating jettisoning the consensus option because the rationale for the consensus in the first place, is still very much in place.

"Members of the IBB 2011 Presidential Campaign Organisation are already being accommodated in the Amalgamated Atiku Campaign Organisation to give the necessary support to the consensus candidate.

"We also wish to state that inasmuch as we appreciate the support, endorsement and open invitation of the leadership of the National Democratic Party towards General Babangida, there has never been any platform where formal dialogue was entered into."
