Yenagoa—Two men, were, yesterday, shot dead by unknown gunmen in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The incident happened about 11.30am in Goodnews Street, Off Sani Abacha Road in the Azikoro suburb. It was gathered that the two men were intercepted by a jeep carrying two armed men, and a third associate, who coordinated the mission.
The men, according to community sources, came out with guns after blocking their victim's car and rained bullets on them, one shooting through the front door, the other from the front windshield.
It was gathered that the gunmen after the first round of shooting, were ordered back to continue the shooting spree on the targets to ensure they were really dead.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victims, were not known faces in the community, while the gunmen were also strange faces.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Fidelis Odunwa, who confirmed the incident, said they were on top of the matter, as investigation into the killings had begun, adding that it was too early to established whether it was a cult related attack.
Meanwhile, Col. Bernard Kenebai, Special Adviser on Security to Bayelsa State Governor, in a statement, denied that one of the victims was a security aide to the state governor, saying "We wish to debunk claims and insinuations that the persons killed are security aides to the governor. They are actually repentant militants working closely with Joint Task Force, JTF, the police and State Security Services, SSS.
"Government wish to condemn in the strongest terms the killing of two people in Yenagoa. Government is working closely with the security agencies to unravel the perpetrators of this dastardly act and bring them to book."
"Governor Dickson is deeply sad by this incident and wish to condone with the families of the deceased."
