Asaba—MEDICAL doctors under the aegis of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, staged a peaceful protest in Asaba, Delta State, yesterday, following the kidnap of two of their colleagues.
Vanguard gathered that Dr. Otobo Ugege was, weekend, kidnapped in front of his house in Warri while Dr. A.C. Ojumah was abducted in front of Government Hospital, Abraka.
As a result of the incidents, the leadership of the state NMA declared Tuesday and yesterday, no work day.
The aggrieved doctors, all dressed in their white lab coat, visited the state Police Command Headquarters in Asaba, as well as some media outfits with placards condemning the kidnap of their members.
At the state police headquarters, Delta State chairman of NMA, Dr. Abaninwa Chuks-Ossai, said "since Tuesday, we have not provided services at our various hospitals. Our colleagues' lives are in serious danger. Kidnappers have been sending us text messages that they have the list of all doctors in the state and that they have the list of our children, the schools they attend and our wives; that all of us are at risk. They also threatened that the two of our colleagues currently in custody will be killed, if we don't bring N5 million each for them and come after us."
Addressing the protesting doctors, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Taiwo Lakanu, said the police were on top of the situation. "I will assure you that within two days, you will hear positive result."
