ONITSHA—Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, in Anambra State, yesterday, threatened to arrest commercial vehicle drivers operating with retreaded and expired tyres.
FRSC commander in Onitsha unit, Mr Fred Okoh, said the planned operation was to ensure the safety of motorists and passengers in the state.
He described as unfortunate, the sale and use of retreaded tyres by both dealers and commercial vehicle drivers in not only Anambra but other states of the federation.
Okoh said some of the road accidents recorded on Nigerian roads occurred as a result of retreaded tyres.
Speaking while decorating three officers of the command, Okoh said the awareness would go a long way to reduce incessant auto crashes occasioned by the use of retreaded tyres.
He said the unit had carried out extensive awareness on the dangers of retreaded tyres at motor-parks and markets, adding that it had concluded plans to collaborate with relevant regulatory bodies to ensure the quality of tyres sold in Onitsha markets.
On the promoted officers, the unit commander said that the officers had helped the unit achieve numerous successes in its mandate of reducing road crashes in Onitsha for some years now.
"I feel very elated and happy, that under my stewardship, three officers were promoted; that shows the kind of work they are doing here and that the management had recognised their hard work. That was they have been promoted. It was hard work, dedication and promotion examinations because it is not enough for you to say you are qualified for promotion; you must sit for an examination and when you pass, it is still not automatic, if there are vacancies, then of course, you be promoted. But basically it is earned on hard work."
