BENIN—THERE was pandemonium, yesterday, in Benin City, Edo State, when members of civil society organisations, barricaded Edo State Police headquarters' gate over the continued incarceration of Executive Director of African Network for Environment and Economic Justice, ANEEJ, Rev. David Ugolor.
Tension heightened after the police command and a team of detectives from the headquarters investigating the matter, refused to allow Ugolor's wife, Ngozi, access to her husband. The Police prevented her from giving food to Ugolor, insisting that they would take care of his feeding.
This compelled Ugolor to go on hunger strike, while the protesters raised alarm of alleged plot to poison the activist.
It will be recalled that detectives had last Friday, arrested Ugolor, after they claimed that one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder of the Principal Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, late Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, confessed that one "David" ordered them to assassinate Oyerinde.
But the civil society organisations in the state described the claim as spurious and an attempt to frame up Ugolor, who incidentally laboured to revive Oyerinde at the hospital, few minutes after he was shot.
