Awka – The Consumer Protection Council on Tuesday sealed off four filling stations in Aba, Abia, for allegedly selling adulterated diesel to unsuspecting customers.
The South-East Zonal Coordinator of the Council, Tam Tamunokonbia, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Awka on Tuesday.
Tamunokonbia said that the attendants of the affected stations were later handed over to the police as the managers or owners of the stations could not be arrested.
"Information got to us that some filling stations were selling adulterated diesel to members of the public.
"We went to 10 filling stations in company of armed policemen and members of the consumer protection council state committee," he said.
The coordinator explained that the visit to the stations showed that some of them were involved in under-measurement of their fuel pumps.
Tamunonkobia said that the council later ordered the closure of the stations, adding that those that readjusted their pumps to the appropriate measurement immediately, were opened.
He said that the surveillance had revealed that more than 60 per cent of the filling stations were engaged in selling adulterated diesel to the public.
The coordinator added that owners of the sealed stations would be charged to court after police investigations and appealed to state governments in the zone to assist the council in mopping up adulterated diesel.
He disclosed that operatives of the council impounded more than N500, 000 substandard yoghurt products from Awada Market.
Tamunonkobia said that the council would step-up its enlightenment campaign to rid the markets in the zone of fake and substandard products. (NAN)
