The Lagos governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has reiterated that the new traffic law would help promote safety of road users in the state.
Fashola stated this on Friday at the Lagos Central Senatorial District town hall meeting held to mark his 1,900 days in office.
Represented by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, the governor said the provisions of the new law were in line with what was obtainable in developed societies.
He said the prohibition of commercial motorcyclists from operating in some areas of the state, and other regulations placed on motorists, were aimed at making the road safer for all and sundry.
The enforcement officers will not arrest you unless you are doing something that endangers other road users", the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Fashola as saying at the meeting.
He said the government would continue to create awareness on the provisions of the new law in order to sensitise the populace and ensure total compliance.
The governor said effort of his administration in the past one year over the demolition of illegal structures had yielded positive results.
Lagosians are beginning to appreciate our greenery programme. The beautification and landscaping of Lagos has made the place more suitable for us as people of the state.
We have achieved 70 per cent reduction in traffic gridlock on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. Miscreants are being flushed out of their hideouts under the bridges, and these reclaimed areas are being turned into recreational parks which would be put to good use by all of us,'' he added.
Fashola said the goal of his administration was to make Lagos a top destination for investors through the creation of enabling environment for maximisation of its economic opportunities.
