THE victory that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has recorded through the courts recently reverberated Tuesday at the party's one-day national convention held at the Dr Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

In what leaders  said was a bid to strengthen and reposition the party, a new leadership was elected to fight the 2011 electoral battle.

National Chairman of the party, Chief Adebisi Akande, who traced its origin to the National Convention of December 2006 where the Action Congress was formally launched, blamed former President Olusegun Obasanjo for various obstacles erected on its way in the periods before, during and post 2007 elections.

He said: "The former President used the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify candidates; he used the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to publish the names of our members allegedly for corrupt practices."

Former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, accused the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for promoting division in the opposition political parties in a bid to hold on to power.

He said: "PDP is busy dividing the country. ACN will sweep the country of corruption and abuse of office. It is bye-bye to dilapidated infrastructure. They have promoted unemployment in the country. Governor of Lagos State, our dear actualiser, is working. Edo is taking on a new look. This is the model of democracy that Nigeria wants. This is what ACN represents. We are determined to focus on the people through development and progress."

Taking a swipe at the PDP,  Tinubu said: "PDP does not have competent aspirants. They are not qualified to rule. They introduced do-or die politics. We say we will not die; they better die if they want. Our people should be ready to fight for freedom. Freedom is not easy. Power is not going to be served a la carte...

"Instead of addressing issues, they are busy abusing themselves. Where is their character? Where is their integrity?"
