The leadership of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly yesterday said its members were grilled by the operatives of the anti-fraud department of the Nigerian Police Force over the alleged diversion of N78million approved by the state government for the 43rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference held in South Africa from June 29 to July 8.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the police waded into the controversy following a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, by a civil society group, Transparency and Good Governance Coalition alleging that the Speaker, Kombowei Benson and members after receiving N78m to enable them attend the 43rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in South Africa allegedly diverted the fund.

However, the allegations and decision of the House to embark on six weeks drew the ire of the leadership of the Action Congress of Nigeria which described the action of lawmakers as a show of shame.
