The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and other relevant agencies in the maritime sector, weekend , carried out an evacuation exercise on a vessel, MT Takoradi, seized eight months ago by the Nigerian Navy for alleged illegal bunkering.
The vessel, loaded with one million litres of diesel was arrested by the navy's newly acquired platform, NNS Thunder , while on patrol .
After its interception, the vessel was reportedly discovered to be operating on the high sea without clearance after which it was handed over to the EFCC for further investigation.
Agencies present at the evacuation process included the Department for Petroleum Resources, DPR, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA and the evacuating company, Fenix Impex Nigeria.
Chairman of the Fenix Impex Limited, Mr. Tenebe Jarret explained that the company's participation in the evacuation was an indication that indigenous companies could perform effectively if given the opportunity.
