Lagos- President Goodluck Jonathan will on Sept. 25 in Abuja, flag off the movement of the 'Torch of Unity' to mark the official countdown to the forthcoming 18th National Sports Festival.
TheĀ festival tagged: "Eko 2012," would hold between Nov. 27 and Dec. 9 in Lagos.
In a statement in Lagos on Sunday, Dr Kweku Tandoh, the Secretary-General, Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the festival, said that Jonathan would be joined at the event by all the state governors.
Tandoh added that Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Lagos State Deputy Governor, who is also the LOC Chairman and the committee members, would also be at the occasion.
"The festival torch is expected to go round all the other 35 states of the federation and the FCT during a 60-day period before arriving in the host state, Lagos.
"So, every state in the federation will have the torch with them for some days, thereby creating awareness among the people in those states," he said.
Tandoh noted that the torch symbolised unity and friendship which, he said, were some of the ideals of the sports festival.
"The torch also symbolises the unity and friendship that is engendered by the spirit of the sports festival."
He recalled that the games was conceived after the civil war as one of the tools of building friendship, unity and togetherness among the various federating units of the nation. (NAN)
