Properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed by irate students of the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti who were protesting thedeath of a final year accountancy student, Abiola Teslim Yusuf, who was allegedly hit by a vehicle near one of the private hostels close to the campus.
Among the properties damaged were cars belonging to the school and some members of staff, offices and even a motorcycle said to belong to a non-academic staff.
Some edifices including the multi-million Naira Information and Communication Technology Centre, had their window glasses smashed during the rampage, the university's agricultural farm housing about 3,500 birds, 10 goats, 75 sheep and rams, 25 rabbits, 30 pigs was looted during the violent protest.
Also, 120 crates of eggs were also confirmed to have been taken away, while workers in the farm were given the beating of their lives.
However, as at yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi Olu, said seven students, who took part in the riot, were being held at the police headquarters, Ado-Ekiti adding that the driver of the vehicle that allegedly knocked down the late student was being trailed as at press time.
The driver fled the scene immediately the incident occurred, while the lady he came to drop was beaten black and blue before she was rescued by policemen and taken to the administrative building on the campus.
Disagreement had broken out when a man had gone to drop a lady, said to be a student of the institution at her hostel and was accosted by the late student.
Sources said the student taunted the driver ofthe car that he was behaving like an oppressor by going out with a student saying that was why some ladies on campus would not want to go out with their colleagues.
Other sources said the late student demanded money from the driver for encroaching on students' territory. How the altercation got out of hand is not yet clear, but the vehicle hit the deceased who bled from the ear. He was reportedly rushed to a number of hospitals in town before he died on Friday.
