Title: Floods threaten polio campaign in Nigeria
Post by: stanley igbinoba on Oct 08, 2012, 11:55 AM
THE efforts of the Federal Government to stop the transmission of the Wild Polio Virus (WPV) by 2013 through the ongoing Immunisation Plus Days (IPDs) in 11 high risk states is being threatened by the raging floods that have affected most parts of the country and displaced many residents.

The situation, The Guardian gathered, has made most areas inaccessible and has displaced many families, thereby rendering the prepared micro-plan for the campaign almost ineffective.

Also, for the first time in a very long while, Nigeria is the only polio endemic country that did not record any case of WPV in the past week. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the other polio endemic countries.

The Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication (PTPE) and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in collaboration with the United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organisation (WH0), Rotary International and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Saturday October 6, 2012 began a four-day immunisation campaign targeted to reach 25 million under-five children in 11 polio high risk states with over 28 million doses of the oral polio vaccine (OPV).
