WARRI—Victims of the ravaging flood in Delta State say they prefer to remain at the rehabilitation camps set up by the state government rather than return to their submerged homes.
Some of the victims who spoke to Vanguard, said they lost their homes and all their belongings, adding that going back to their submerged communities was not their immediate desire, as they did not know what might happen next.
Mr. John Ogbodu, who was sacked with his family from his home at Igbide community, said: "I am now a refugee with seven members of my family, but it is better to be alive in the government camp than to sleep in my house and be washed away by flood."
Victims at Saint Michael's College Rehabilitation Camp in Isoko commended the state government for evacuating them to the camp and called for the provision of more relief materials.
National Coordinator of Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence, Mr. Oghenejabor Ikimi, whose group visited some of the flood victims, told Vanguard that the victims preferred the rehabilitation camps to their swamped villages.
Most of the victims also praised their representative at Delta State House of Assembly, Chief Benjamin Essien, for providing boats and lorries to ferry them from their submerged villages to safety, and providing food stuffs and relief materials since their arrival in the camp.
