Title: House summons IGP over Mubi, Port Harcourt killings
Post by: DT on Oct 10, 2012, 10:30 AM
The House of Representatives has summoned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, over the recent killing of about 26 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi and murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt.

The decision to invite the police boss followed adoption of a motion on the matter sponsored by Rep. Abubakar Wambai. In his motion, Rep. Wambai expressed concerns on the mystery surrounding the killings.

Also, the House mandated its relevant committees on National Security and Public Safety and Police Affairs to explain the perceived late response of the police and other security agencies during the attacks.

The House also called on the executive arm to set up a fact-finding committee on the attacks.

Rep. Jerry Manwe (PDP, Taraba) said the Mubi attack was beyond a mere dispute over students' union elections and accused the security agencies of failing to do their job. However, no date has been fixed for the IGP's appearance before the committees.

Also yesterday, the Senate said the arguments for the creation of state police appeared valid in lieu of the failure of the police to secure the lives and property of the citizenry.

Adopting a motion sponsored by Senator Ayogu Eze (PDP, Enugu North) and 98 other senators, on the murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt and one other person at Omuokiri Village in Aluu Community of Rivers State on Friday, the Senate urged the police and other security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book.

Senate President David Mark said crime happens in Nigeria because perpetrators go scot-free, saying the killing of the students portrayed the nation in bad light before the international community.
