Scholarship Description: The South African Department of Science & Technology and the National Research Foundation jointly support the activities of the South African Biosystematics Initiative (SABI). SABI aims to develop a representative community of systematic biologists – well supported by government and society – that addresses exciting and important issues relevant to South Africa's rich biological heritage. SABI's funding and its activities are therefore focused around four thrusts including research, education and training, public understanding of science, and infrastructure.

Tenure of award: The fellowships is applicable for a period of one year with a possible extension for another year, based on satisfactory progress, mutual agreement with supervisors and availability of funds.

Value: Total offer is of R150, 000 per year and running expenses to a maximum value of R50, 000 per year (which includes funds for international travel, if required)

Selection criteria:-Academic merit of the applicant

- Citizenship of the applicant (preference will be given to SA citizens or permanent residence permit holders) – Equity and redress issues (i.e. race and gender of the applicant).

- Significance of research in terms of the problem statement (the proposed research must address SABI's research scope – see Item 2.1 above).

- Appropriateness of research approach/methodology.

- Potential impact of the research to science and the benefits to society.

- The benefit of the post-doctoral fellow's contribution to the museum.

- The access and the availability of the required infrastructural support (e.g. office, computer and laboratory facilities etc) at the museum.

- Budget motivation
