Former acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Pastor Power Ziakede Aginighan, has urged the Federal Government to take proactive measures to avert the incident of flooding in the future. Aginighan also wantsthe government to ensure that Nigerians are not unduly exposed to such natural disasters.
He made the call in Warri, Delta state during a tour of some communities affected by therecent flood in Burutu North, Ughelli South and Bomadi local government areas of the state.
In a press statement made available to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY, Aginighan said there was a catastrophic humanitarian disaster, which is expressed in the total displacement of the victims from their homes and called on the government to evacuate persons rendered homeless to resettlement camps.
While expressing concern over a looming hunger caused by the destruction of farmlands, fish ponds and other means of livelihood, he lauded President Goodluck Jonathan for approving N17.6 billion to mitigate the suffering of the victims and forsetting up the National Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation.
"It is my fervent prayer that this noble and people driven gestures should not be hijacked by evil minded and unpatriotic Nigerians whose delight is to make profit from the misfortunes of their fellow citizens. To this end, I urge governors of all the affected states to ensure that only credible and God fearing Nigerians are appointed into the committees set up to distribute relief materials to the affected communities," he said.
