Title: No section should corner Nigeria’s wealth – Wamakko
Post by: DT on Oct 19, 2012, 01:31 PM
Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto state yesterday said it is inappropriate for any section of the country to corner the lion share of its wealth in the name of derivation.

Speaking when he received this year's Raymond Dokpesi Peace Award in Abuja, Wamakko urged those against revisiting the onshore-offshore dichotomy to have re-think and reconsider their stand on the controversial revenue sharing formula in the nation. The governor said "as a matter of opinion, I want you to just go to the internet, ask for what obtains in other countries, if you compare with what is happening in Nigeria, it is different from what is happening in the world where there is this kind of deposit that are making national economy or national income or whatever you may call it.

"In Sudan, they give two percent to oil derivation regions, in other countries, they don't have. But as a nation, we should not be so concerned about winner takes all; we are one nation.

"We were a country before the introduction of oil and we were doing well. That time, go to the north, to the southwest or east, it was their farm produce and other commodities that were running this country. Nobody was given any 20, 30, 50 percent at that time; it was Nigeria's income and everybody was happy.

"So, I think we should think well, act well and do what is right so that this country will continue to enjoy the resources that were given to us by God, not by ourselves."
