The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, says Nigeria has failed because of lack of mentoring, as people get to leadership positions unprepared.
Sanusi, who said this in Abuja at the weekend while delivering a lecture on "Mentoring and National Development" at an event marking the 50th birthday of NTA ace broadcaster Eugenia Abu, said that such unpreparedness is visible in most sensitive positions and offices in the country.
He said: "So at the level of leadership of the country from the national level, governors, senators, chairmen of local governments, the business community, we need to ask ourselves: do we as a nation make a conscious effort to groom our successors? Do we think long term? Is it any good for you as a governor or a president or a senator to say this is what you have done and then move on without an interest in who will be the next generation?
"This country, in my view, has failed because of lack of mentoring. People come into positions unprepared, without guidance and they try to learn on the job and it has happened to the most sensitive positions and the most sensitive offices that you can think about in the nation."
He also said the issue of mentoring comes up partly because the country is short of role models, and that many young people are looking desperately for role models as they try to find their ways "in this difficult terrain that we navigate as a country."
Sanusi lamented that gone are the days when Nigerians cherished virtues like intelligence, honesty and kindness.
In her remarks, the celebrant, Eugenia Abu, said that the best part of mentoring young people is to be in a position of authority and be accountable to the people.

Glad he could open his mouth and say the truth, our present president is the most unprepared and incompetent.
