DUTSE—As victims of the recent devastating flood count their losses in Jigawa State, prices of food stuffs and other essential commodities have continued to rise across the state.
A market survey conducted by Vanguard in Kazaure and Dutse towns showed that a measure of local
rice which is mainly consumed by the low income earners that was earlier sold for N250 had risen to between N350 and N370, while foreign rice which sold at N450 now goes for N550.
A measure of beans which sold for N300 now sells at N500 while that of millet and guinea corn sell for N120 and N180 as against N100 and N120 respectively.
Also a measure of maize which went for N90 now goes for N150 just as three medium sized tubers of yam now go for N800 against the earlier price of N350. Prices of provisions such as milk, sugar and coffee have equally skyrocketed. A tin of milk which cost N100 before, now costs N130 while a tin of coffee and a packet of sugar which were sold at N200 each now go for N250 respectively.
