PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President of World Bank, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke and other eminent personalities, have joined the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI) to champion the cause for proper legislation and implementation of investment in early childhood education in the country.
Declaring open the third National Conferenceon Kindergarten Education in Port Harcourt yesterday, President Goodluck Jonathan said sound education, application of knowledge and policy implementation of early childhoodeducation were key in promoting speedy development in the country.
The president who was represented by the Minister of Youth Development, Alhaji Inumo Abdul Kadir, pointed out that education is not a privilege, but an inalienable right of every child.
On his part, Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi said that he would forward a bill to the Rivers State House of Assembly tomake education compulsory at all levels, a move he believes would compel parents to send their children to school from their childhood, as offenders would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
The former World Bank Vice-President, Oby Ezekwesili also lent her voice to the issue, explaining that education in any economy is the vehicle through which societal development can be achieved.
