Mr. Alaibe recently left the Jonathan government, declaring he would run for office under the platform of the Labour Party. He had just held a meeting with members of his community to inform them of his ambition when word came that a gang of 14 militants sent to attack the gathering had arrived.
Eyewitnesses said Mr. Alaibe's supporters, believed to be a rival group, confronted the invaders, killing three of them instantly. They arrested 11 others and began the process of finishing them off. It is not yet known what may have happened to them.
