About 324 Nigerian Christian Pilgrims yesterday arrived in Israel for the Holy pilgrimage.

The pilgrims were made up of contingents from Kaduna, Plateau, Zamfara, Kogi, Benue and Abuja.

Mr Simeon Gana, Director of Administration, Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), urged the pilgrims to see themselves as ambassadors of Christ.

"Pilgrimage is one of the Federal Government's Foreign Policies, so as you are Ambassadors of Christ according to the biblical injunctions, in like manner you are ambassadors of Nigeria.

Justice Salam

A group, the Alliance For A Better Judiciary (ABJ) yesterday reacted to the rejection of Court of Appeal's President Justice Isa Ayo Salami's offer of appointment to the Supreme Court. It said the Justice Salami has the right to reject what it called the "unholy elevation".

Nigeria international Rabiu Afolabi has set up a foundation to assist schools in his country.

According to executive consultant for the foundation, Adewole Afolabi, the Red Bull Salzburg star defender has started out with a donation of 50,000 customised books worth about $20,000 (about N3m) to selected public primary and secondary schools in his home state of Osun.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has described the creation of 12 new universities by the Federal Government as "the politicisation of the university education system."

Addressing reporters yesterday after its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the Federal University of Technology in Owerri (FUTO), the Imo State capital, ASUU National President Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie said though the new schools may have met some political exigencies, it would have been better to upgrade the 28 existing federal universities.

A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ekiti State, Mr. Joseph Olugbamila, has called for the spirit of sportsmanship among politicians.

Olugbamila said political positions were for service and urged them to shun acts that could disrupt the peace.

President Goodluck Jonathan has urged researchers in universities to provide solutions to the nation's economic problems.

Jonathan said researches should not only be aimed at career advancement, but also at solving problems."

He spoke during the fourth convocation of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State.

Elections in Nigeria since 1998/99 seem to suggest the more we spend in conducting them the more shambolic the outcome. Back then the country spent N8.6 billion on the elections. Hajiya Fatima Muazu, a former National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), gave the figures while speaking at a seminar in August 2003 in Kaduna which reviewed the year's elections earlier in March.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  to involve all stakeholders in the process of removing double and multiple registration from the newly-compiled voter register.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,  said information at its disposal show that the cleansing process was not transparent.

A Judge at the Federal High Court, Benin Division, Justice Adamu Hobon  has threatened to issue a bench warrant on  a former Edo State Governor   Lucky Igbinedion should he fail to appear in  court at the next sitting.

Justice Hobon ruled in a  case brought against  Igbinedion and six others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday.

ABOUT $350 billion has been lost to climate change, also known as  global warming in the last five years, it was learnt yesterday.

An expert on Sustainable Environmental Finance, Dr. Kenny Tang, said the world lost $240 billion in 2005.
