Penske Automotive Group has begun negotiations with Mercedes-Benz to transfer the responsibility for U.S. distribution and sale of Smart vehicles.

As a result of the transfer, a new Smart four-door model based on the Nissan March has been canceled. The Smart four-door was to have been assembled in Mexico and shipped to the U.S., beginning in late 2011. Penske reportedly had planned to price the car under $12,000.
