Nigeria Football Federation To Trim Super Eagles Staff

I can report that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is planning to trim down the number of back staff attached to the Super Eagles.

Nigeria's Super Eagles, who are African champions, have 17 support staff including officials, and the federation is now pencilling down names for the downsizing exercise.

An official in the federation informed that the decision is aimed trimming down its expenses ahead of the month of June when the African champions will have a busy schedule that would include the Fifa 2014 World Cup qualification and the Confederations Cup.

Also, the NFF has identified that there are duplication of duties and will prune down the support staff to the Nigerian national team to either seven or nine.

"The federation is thinking very seriously about reducing the number of support staff the Super Eagles have at present. As far as we are all concerned, the federation has been battling with fund challenges for so long and there's a serious need to cut down on unnecessary and wasteful expenses.

"The number of support staff and the Super Eagles officials right now are 17 and that's rather too many as there are lots of duplication of duties. Pruning them down to nine or seven is what the NFF is thinking about," the NFF official said.

However, two assistant coaches to Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi, could also be affected by the downsizing exercise.

Keshi's assistants currently include Sylvanus Okpala, Daniel Amokachi, Valere Houandinou and Ike Shorunmu, who is the goalkeeping trainer.

"We are thinking of having just the head coach, two assistant coaches and goalkeeper coach as well as the curator, physiotherapist, medical doctor, team secretary and the media officer," said the NFF source.
