FG Plans Power Conservation Policy

 THE Federal Government has planned power conservation policy in harmony with its belief that electricity preservation is vital to the realisation of 24 -hours power supply target in the country.

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, who disclosed this Friday in Port Harcourt during the commissioning of some power facilities in Rivers State, said the importance of power preservation could not be overemphasised.

The minister said it was disheartening that most Nigerians leave their homes with their electric appliances on, thereby consuming power that should have been utilised in other places.

According to him: "One thing we need to ensure is that Nigerians learn about power conservation.  As many people are getting power, they leave their homes with their air conditions on. That means that power that should have gone to other places is just being wasted in one area.

"That is why in our renew energy policy we are trying to make up for Nigeria; we are putting power or energy conservation as a component of it to enable us hit the time."

On the recent drop in power generation, the minister explained that the reduction was occasioned by maintenance of the gas pipeline by Chevron Nigeria Limited, but noted that the problem has been fixed and that the electricity supply has returned to about 4,000mw.

He further stated that 4,000mw was small for a population of over 150 million people, but reiterated that President Goodluck Jonathan was determined to ensure an uninterrupted power supply in no distant time.

Nebo urged Nigerians to be patient, noting that electricity and infrastructure do not grow overnight.
