We have to use technology to boost Power says Nebo, Minister of Power.

                        In line with the modern dictates, today's power supply boosts would be technologically driven, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo has said.

The Minister while commissioning the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company's (PHEDC) Corporate Headquarters and Silver bird  1 X 15MVA, 33/11KV injection substation, also noted that the introduction of Geographic Information System (GIS), Automated Meter Ready system (AMR), Advanced Metering Infrastructure are technology driven initiatives that have radically changed the way things are done in the sector.

He specifically applauded the Geographic Information System (GIS) technology which he said would boost load management study and balancing of distribution network, calling on other distribution companies to emulate Port-Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company in this regard.

The Minister said the technological equipment in use in the power sector by Port-Harcourt Distribution Company would enhance revenue collection, energy management as well as promote accountability. He expressed optimism that all these technological compliance initiatives would all enjoy Federal Government's support.

Nebo, who later addressed the staff of the Company, called for a positive reorientation to work just as he urged them to key into the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan's Administration in the power sector.  The 2010 Power Sector Reform, he said, should not derail; assuring them that all their entitlements would be paid to them in the on-going privatization programme.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC), Engr. Rotimi Onanuga commended the Minister for finding time out of his tight schedule, to come to Port-Harcourt for the formal commissioning of the Corporate Headquarters which he said, would provide a good working environment that will spur the staff to perform better.

Engr. Onanuga further stated that Silver Bird 1×15 MVA, 33kv Injection Substation which was being commissioned would relieve the grossly overloaded on the Ojoto 11kv feeder emanating from UST 2 x15mMVA, 33/11kV injection substation and overloaded Abonnena 11kV from UTC injection substation respectively, stressing that the affected customers have been long subjected to a strict load shedding prior to this time.

Also, the Chairman of Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Port Harcourt Zonal Headquarters, Comrade Itoro Thomas, thanked the Minister for the visit and told him that workers had since embraced privatization of the sector.  He however, called on Federal Government not to short change them in the exercise as a way of reciprocating the good gesture of support from the workers.

In a related development, the Minister was also at the site of the upgraded Akani 2×15 MVA 33/11kV injection substation and Afam Power Station where he assured the staff that their problems would be looked into.

It would be recalled that Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) is the first distribution company the Minister is visiting on assumption of office.
