Vacancy Announcement for the Recruitment of Two Accountants

 Background  The African University of Science & Technology is a private, Pan-African, coeducational, research university located in Abuja, Nigeria. The mission of AUST is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the African continent in the 21st century. AUST is dedicated to providing its students with an education that combines rigorous academic study and the excitement of discovery with the support and intellectual stimulation of a diverse international and diaspora community. It is owned by NMI.

The Nelson Mandela Institution for Knowledge Building and the Advancement of Science and Technology (NMI) is a Non-profit Organisation established in 2004 to promote excellence in science and engineering and their applications to foster development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our major initiative is establishing African Institutes of Science and Technology as centers of academic excellence across the African continent.

These Institutions, African University of Science and Technology (AUST) and Nelson Mandela Institution (NMI) have both received grant from the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) in the amount totaling US$3.6million towards the cost of the program, Support to Capacity Initiative of AUST in Science and Technology and intends to apply part of the proceeds of the grant to cover remunerations to Accountants employed for the two Institutions.

Objectives  The accounts units of both institutions are responsible for the complete, appropriate, timely and accurate reporting of all transactions of each institution in accordance with international financing reporting standards (IFRS) and financial procedures of both AUST and NMI. They also provide reports that are useful for decision making by the Boards of Trustees and Directors and relevant outside partners.

Duties and Responsibilities Under the guidance of the Supervisor, the incumbent will perform the following duties and responsibilities:

• Ensure the proper accounting treatment of all the transactions.
• Participate in the formulation and review of accounting policies and practices with respect to the products and services of each institution.
• Provide technical accounting guidance, including proactively participating in complex transactions and communicating financial statements implications to Management.
• Verify all journal vouchers and accounting entries.
• Participate in or initiate the preparation and technical review of periodic financial statements and reports, budget and management reports that are produced.
• Be a key resource person on accounting issues and projects.
• Represent the accounts unit in relevant working groups as assigned.
• Maintain the Register of Assets.
• Provide reports, statements and schedules for auditing of project activities.
• Review of reconciliation, support documents and requests for payments in accordance with the Institution's policy and guidelines.

Qualifications/Experience/Selection Criteria (including skills, knowledge):

• At least a Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field – Applicant must however be a Chartered Accountant (ICAN or ACCA certified). A Masters degree in MBA or Finance would be an added advantage.
• At least 6 years work experience with proven ability in financial management and accounting
• Must have the capacity to work effectively in a team.
• Must be able to communicate in oral and written English.
• Strong knowledge and experience of the accounting standards.
• Deep knowledge of accounting policies and procedures, and ability to detect the control mechanisms that may be needed to be put in place.
• Strong analytical skills.
• Must be competent in the use of, and ability to learn established accounting software such as Tally.

Duty Station:  Abuja, Nigeria

Duration of Contract:  Three years. The first will be a probation year at the successful completion of which the contract would be renewed and extended for at least two more years.

Salary: Competitive and Negotiable.
