Upsets as Mark, Oyinlola, Kalu, others lose - National Mirror

There were major upsets in the National Assembly elections held yesterday across the country with the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) leading in many Northern states hitherto controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while some serving governors, senators lost the election in their wards.

[attach=1 align=left] The worst hit was the PDP. As at last night, the CPC was in clear lead in Katsina, Bauchi, Kano, Kebbi, Kaduna and Nasarawa. The PDP still maintains its hold on the South-South and South-East. The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) is making serious inroads into some states, especially Benue and Ogun. Vice President Namadi Sambo lost his ward to the CPC in Kaduna State where the CPC candidate polled 265 votes against PDP's 115 in the senatorial seat. In the House of Representatives poll, the CPC scored 277 votes against 103 polled by the PDP.

Governors Ibrahim Shekarau, Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Gabriel Suswam (Benue) lost their wards to the opposition parties. Also, provisional results had it that the PDP lost in the two polling units in Aso Rock to the CPC. In one of the polling units in the Presidential Villa, CPC was said to have polled 195 against PDP's 88. There were also unconfirmed reports that the Senate President, David Mark has lost his re-election bid. The provisional result indicated that Major General Lawrence Onoja (ACN) defeated Mark for the Benue South senatorial seat.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to make public the result of the election. In Benue, the ACN cleared all the senatorial seats with the Joseph Iorshagher Akaagerger defeating Chief Barnabas Gemade (PDP) for the Benue North East while former Governor George Akume (ACN) overran PDP's Terngu Tsegba for the Benue North West. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, was losing the election for the Abeokuta South Federal Constituency. Even in his Ward 10, Iporo Sodeke area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Bankole lost to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate.

Also, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, the daughter of former President and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo lost her ward located at the African Grammar School in Ita Eko area of Abeokuta. Sunday Mirror learnt that with the provisional result from the Abeokuta Central Senatorial District, Obasanjo-Bello, the chairman, Senate Committee on Health is losing to the ACN candidate, Gbenga Obadara.

Former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola was one of the major causalities in the National Assembly polls as he lost the Osun Central Senatorial District to Prof. Sola Adeyeye of the ACN. "I won! Four years ago, the merchants of do-or-die politicking did not allow me to vote for myself. Today, they (Saturday) have been soundly defeated in all 10 local governments of Osun Central Senatorial District. Now we must give Nigeria a worthy Senate.

Thank you God!" Adeyeye, a former member of the House of Representatives said on Saturday. Senator Uche Chukwumereje (PDP) also trashed the former Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), for the Abia North Senatorial District. Senators Iyiola Omisore and Isiaka Adeleke, chairmen, Senate Committee on Appropriation, and INEC respectively lost to Hon. Jide Omoworare of the ACN and Hon. Mudashiru Hussein for the Osun East and Osun West seats.

In Kano State, Governor Shekarau, the presidential candidate of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) lost PU22 Giginyu ward, where he voted to the CPC. Even in the Kano Government House, Shekarau's ANPP lost to the CPC. Provisional result from the Giginyu ward showed that the CPC polled 97 votes as against ANPP's 92 for the Senate while ACN scored 91 against ANPP's 88 for the House of Representatives. Governor Yuguda was roundly defeated in Bauchi State by the CPC. Yuguda lost in his ward.

In the polling unit where he voted, Babasidi Primary School, CPC polled 337 votes against the PDP's 97 for the senatorial seat. In major parts of the state, CPC was in early lead of the votes so far counted as at midnight on Saturday. Governor Daniel also lost his ward in Sagamu. At the Isote Ward in Sagamu where the governor voted, the ACN's candidate, Gbenga Kaka, defeated his preferred candidate, Toheeb Odunowo (PPN) with 121 votes. In Benue State, Governor Gabriel Suswam lost his Saint Terkura Polling Unit as the ACN candidate polled 175 as against PDP's 125.

The ACN swept the polls in Lagos State. Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of former governor of the state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, emerged as the clear winner for the Lagos Central Senatorial District as at last night. Sunday Mirror learnt that though Tinubu has emerged the winner of the senatorial seat, it is being speculated that the court will nullify the election as a result of the omission of the Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate's name, Dapo Durosimi-Etti from the ballot paper.

In Anambra State, former Governor Chris Ngige (ACN) is running neck to neck with Prof. Dora Akunyili, former Minister of Communications and Information, of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) for the Anambra Central Senatorial District. The candidates of the godfather of Kwara State politics, Dr. Olusola Saraki, lost out in the National Assembly polls. Preliminary results show that the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Saraki's party, failed to make significant impact in the elections as the PDP candidates, including Governor Bukola Saraki and other two senatorial candidates are in early lead from the results from the polling units.

Updates

Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola Congratulates Professor Adeyeye, ACN Candidate

[attachimg=1 align=left] I THANK MY SUPPORTERS, I CONGRATULATE THE WINNER.

Last Saturday's Senatorial elections results have shown that for me, the battle has been well fought and lost. I give all the glory to God for seeing us this far.

I have just signed a congratulatory letter to Prof Sola Adeyeye who won the election. In the letter I made it clear that his election was the wish of the people which I respect. I also urged him to use the mandate of the people for the upliftment of the People of Osun Central whose voice he would be in the Senate in the next four years. May God Almighty help him to carry the load. I thank my numerous supporters for being steadfast in their support for all I stand for. I urge them not to be disillusioned by this setback which was very unexpected. I urge us to see this development as a challenge for us to work even harder in the remaining elections. In the next one week, we will vote to choose a President for our dear country and I urge you to come out enmass and vote for President Goodluck Jonathan.

The House of Assembly polls is another vital election that we must go into and win decisively. We have a solemn duty to do that. Both elections are as vital as the ones we held last Saturday. We must not lose again. I do not see Saturday's loss as a defeat, I rather see it as a call for greater dedication to the ideals of selfless service to our fatherland. We must ensure that the remaining elections are won by us in the interest of the Nigerian nation. This is why I urge our teeming supporters to brace up and refuse to be weighed down by this disappointment.

While I congratulate the winners, I urge them not to lose sight of the fact that our people are one despite the differences of political leanings. The winners must, therefore, function as agents of development, progress and unity.

Once again, I call on all our supporters to come out enmass and vote the PDP in the remaining elections. That is what our country needs at this point in time.

Signed: Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
