We’ll Consider Request For Emergency Rule On Its Merit – Ndoma-Egba

Just before President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States, the Senate Majority Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba said the Senate would treat any request of emergency rule in the troubled states on its merit. Briefing National Assembly correspondents after a meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators, Mr. Ndoma-Egba, who said the National Assembly was yet to receive any request for emergency rule from the president, said a state of emergency under the Constitution did not mean the dissolution of democratic structures in the affected states. He said: "A state of emergency as envisaged under our constitution does not contemplate the dissolution of elected structures. We agreed on the import but we haven't received any request yet from the President on state of emergency." Following the growing concerns raised by the incessant violence in northern Nigeria, President Jonathan on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in the three northen states. The President, however, said the proclamation of emergency rule would be transmitted later to the National Assembly. On the crises rocking the ruling party, Mr. Ndoma- Egba said the PDP Senate caucus had intervened in the crises involving the Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi, and the Presidency as well as the Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, and a lawmaker, Senator Aloysius Etuk.
