The jewels were in the safe of the room rented by an employee of Chopard, a luxury jeweler, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The incident at the hotel in central Cannes took place either late Thursday or early Friday as the festival got under way, drawing thousands of movie stars, film industry executives and journalists to the fabled resort.
