The Renaissance Group of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the emergency rule declared in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states by President Goodluck Jonathan a good move that will bring an end to insurgency in those states.

Addressing journalists in Abuja at the weekend after a meeting to review the president's action, National Coordinator of the group, Hon. Kyari Gujbawu, said the gesture is a demonstration of good leadership that will bring lasting solution to the deadly conflict.

He said that the use of the carrot and stick approach has brought the Nigerian society on the same page with the president in the effort to end the conflict.

"You already see that the President's public approval rating on solution to tackling the conflict has improved in the last week since he proclaimed the emergency step," Rep Gujbawu who is the lawmaker representing one of the affected states, Borno, said.

"As controversial as the methodology has been over time, the President has got it right in the circumstance. He has shown he is a true leader and statesman. All he deserves from us now is support; we need to compliment his will power by giving our maximum cooperation," he added.

The group called on adherents of the Boko Haram to accept the olive branch offered by the President through the dialogue/amnesty programme to end the debacle. He also called on the troops carrying out the operation to stick to the rules of engagement keeping in mind their primary objective.

It described the declaration of state of emergency as a demonstration of 'leadership', saying the President has decided rightly, in the circumstance, to end the conflict and called on the few voices making unconstructive criticisms to rally round the president to bring peace to Nigeria.

According to the group, Jonathan has demonstrated patience and wisdom in dealing with the issue to avoid bloodshed and prayed that Boko Haram will see wisdom in the dialogue option which is on the table.

Also, Hon. Friday Etula (PDP, Edo state), Hon. Lekan Abiola and Hon. Zanna Sunoma, all members of the PDP Renaissance Group urged residents in the affected states to carry out their civic responsibility in this trying period.

The National Assembly is expected to debate and approve the President's proclamation tomorrow.
