Ogun State - Mrs. Amosun tasks stakeholders to give priority to environmental issues

 Wife of the Governor of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun has tasked governments, corporate organizations and private individuals to give priority to policies and decisions that can help protect the environment for sustainability and secured future. Delivering a paper titled: “Managing Our Environment for a Sustainable and Secured Future” at a two-day national conference in Abuja, Mrs. Amosun said environment-related issues have become one of the most topical matters in the world agenda today.

She explained that evidence had shown that the impacts of environmental crisis have become major threats to the survival and sustainable development of humanity.

“Several publications have identified Africa as the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Africa is be-deviled with a considerable number of challenges like poverty, diseases etc, and the continent has been identified to be the least able to cope with the impacts of climate change.

“In order to decide what actions we should take it is crucial to have the best possible information on what we actually know for sure about our environment, climate change and its projected effects. We must then take conscious steps at the national, state, local and even at personal level to reduce the ever-growing risks associated with climate change” Mrs. Amosun stated.

The wife of the governor said communique and recommendations emanating from conferences/workshops on environment should be treated with utmost sense of urgency and a time-line for programme of action and implementation should also be put in place. In her welcome address, Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon. Uche Ekwunife said protecting the environment was the responsibility of all stake holders.

“We all clearly understand how the environment underpins all social and economic development, past, present and future. When the environment is abused and neglected, poverty and instability follow. When it is nurtured, well being and prosperity flourish … we live in a time of profound transformation. The challenges are enormous. We have gotten to a point where business as usual is no more an option. This conference can be the guiding light we need to navigate to a more prosperous, equitable and sustainable environmental growth, “she said.

Papers were also delivered by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State; his Kogi State counterpart, Idris Wada, Minister of Environment, Hajiya Hadizah Mailaifia amongst others.
