Refuse Heaps Take Over Bayelsa Capital

Residents of Yenagoa, Bayesa State capital, have expressed concern over the heaps of refuse across the city, warning that they could lead to an outbreak of epidemic, if urgent remedial steps were not taken.

Many street corners in Yenagoa have been converted to refuse dumps, despite  notices prohibiting dumping of refuse in such unathorised places.

Though the state government had made efforts through relevant agencies, to keep the capital city clean, heaps of refuse still litter the streets and road sides.

This reporter, who went round town, noticed the random dumping of wastes  within the state capital by residents and suspected waste vendors.

The stench from the waste, some of which are very close to residential buildings, poses serious health hazard to residents.
