More Nigerians get US envoy’s small grants

U.S. Ambassador Terence P. McCulley presented small grants to 45 Nigerian self-help organizations for projects benefitting communities around the country under the Special Self-Help, Ambassador's Small Grants, and PEPFAR Small Grants Program. The grants totaling about 338,000 dollars are for programs designed by community-based organizations working to improve the health and social conditions of Nigerian people across the country.

Collectively, the small grants projects will benefit over 250,000 Nigerian men, women, and children.

Ambassador McCulley said sseveral of the Special Self Help and the Ambassador's Small Grants projects will assist Nigerian children to access educational facilities and acquire new skills. "These include the renovation and addition of classrooms or classroom furniture and the purchase of library books and school laboratory equipment," he remarked.

The Ambassador also mentioned that other grants will equip community health clinics or provide communities with clean drinking water to improve health and living conditions.

Some of the projects will provide communities with food processing machines, such as rice threshing machines or cassava mills, which will help generate income and stimulate economic growth. The PEPFAR Small Grants Program focuses on community-initiatives for the welfare of children living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, providing school desks, chairs, and supplies; support care-givers in addressing the economic, nutritional, and hygiene needs of affected households; and fund the construction of small clinics and water boreholes.

The Ambassador's PEPFAR Small Grants Program receives support under the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief — or PEPFAR — which provides funding assistance to communities with innovative projects that provide care and support to orphans, vulnerable children, and their households. These grants assist communities to improve the standard of living for children from birth to 17 years through community-led projects.
