PIB....Gives NASS 90 days ultimatum

From Ayodele Samuel,Lagos

Rising from an emergency meeting in Warri, Delta state, Niger Delta leaders under aegis the United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Strategy (UNDEDSS) at the weekend, declared that unless the Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB) becomes law within the next three months, the Federal Government of Nigeria and other oil and gas exploiters will be denied access to these natural resources in the region.

The leaders said that exploration of natural resources in the region have led to the impoverishment of the people of the region and the despoliation it's environment with so very little to show for it.

The group said in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Mr. Tony Uranta, also condemned, "the current politics of hatred that have recently become the norm with certain elder statesmen, and the National Assembly's myopic insistence in perpetuating artificial dichotomies of ethnicity that militate against policies and programmers that are intended to fast-track national economic development, such as the refusal by a sectional caucus to allow the passage into law of PIB.

"Anybody who thinks this is an idle joke, is welcome to "three months is just 90 days from now...soon, we shall know who really owns what in this nation-state! Let's wait and see if the NASS is intent on joining Buhari and company to break up Nigeria."

UNDESS also condemned the irrational focus on petty infighting amongst state governors who are apparently little interested in good governance or the common good and warned that it shall mobilize the citizenry of the Niger Delta to commence non-violent acts of sustained civil disobedience actions, from July 2013.

The leaders also called Federal Government to motivate the holding of regional mini-dialogues this year, and to convene a national dialogue within the first quarter of 2014. "We cannot afford to let Nigeria break, but no Nigerian must be expected to celebrate a 100 years of oppression, feudalism, revisionism, despotism and corruption, if there is no fundamental restructuring of this nation.
