The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, yesterday diverted a Donnier 328 plane conveying Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamako, to Kaduna Airport due to violation of safety and security measure allegedly perpetuated by the supporters of the governor.

A statement signed by the Special Assistant, Media to the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Joe Obi, stated that the Air Traffic Controllers, ATC, took the measure due to a near-breakdown of law and order at the Sokoto Airport by an unruly crowd of Wamako supporters.

Obi stated that the governor's supporters broke the fence of the airport and were on their way to the tarmac, apparently to welcome him.

The governor, he said, was in an Abuja inbound flight to Sokoto.

He added that effort by security operatives to prevent the breach was met with stiff resistance from the crowd.

The statement said that NAMA decided to divert the aircraft to Kaduna to restore normalcy.

"The governor and other passengers on board have since returned and landed safely at the airport, after the unruly crowd had been successfully restrained from entering the restricted zone," he added.

Security measures must be taken to make things go smoothly when it comes to Air issues. That is simply the case. Gud one.
