Olugbenga Ashiru                        Federal Government is repositioning Nigeria in the sub-region, Africa and in the international community to regain its position as the giant of Africa.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru made this known at the 2013 Ministerial Platform in Abuja while presenting his Ministry's scorecard for the past two years.

In recognition of the maxim that foreign policy is the extension of the domestic policy, he said, Nigeria's new focus is underpinned by democratic values at home as well as in Africa.

Nigeria, in partnership with the African Union is making strenuous efforts to lead the process of entrenching democracy in Africa.

The nation's first test case in defending democracy, he remarked, was her intervention in the crisis in Cote d'Ivoire, which could have had a destabilizing effect not just to the Sub-region, but to over three million Nigerians living in that country.  "President Jonathan in his capacity as the ECOWAS Chairman of the Regional Contact Group on Guinea Bissau has successfully directed the negotiation which brought peace and political stability to the country", the Minister said.

He added that political prisoners were released from detention and ECOWAS Military Force in Guinea Bissau was effectively deployed.
